If you are in the process of moving or will be in the near future, now is the perfect time to sort through all the clutter and decide what not to take with you. It’s best to get rid of things you don’t need now, so you can carry the least amount of stuff. It can be a real money saver if you only need to rent a smaller moving truck or make fewer trips through town.
Go Through Your Closet
Clothes may not seem to take up the most amount of space. After all, they can be shoved into dressers or folded away and forgotten about. However, a lot of old clothing that doesn’t get used anymore can add up to take up room you could use for other things. Be honest about what you truly need and what you don’t, and give away or donate the clothing you no longer want.
Decide the Fate of Furniture
A new home often means new furniture. By deciding ahead of time which furniture pieces will be replaced, you can cut down on some steps in the moving process. You can sell, give away, or donate unwanted furniture to those in need.
Get Rid of the Garbage
Before packing, go through the entire home and throw away anything you don’t need. We tend to save much more stuff than we actually need. Grab some trash bags and fill them up with clutter that’s accumulated over the years. Doing this ahead of time will be much less stressful than having to do it on moving day.
Talk to the Children
It’s much harder for kids to part with their toys and other belongings. Even if they haven’t used them in years, it remains a part of their identity. Forcing them to part with some items can have a significant emotional impact on them. Take some time to sit down with them and discuss the moving process. Educate them on the benefits of donating items that they no longer need to those that are less fortunate.
